A neonicotinoid called “Acetamiprid” has raised so much concern over here that the National beekeepers association, UNAF, called a press conference in Paris this week, 11th Feb.
M. Jaques Freney, vice president of the Rhone region beekeeper' s association, has kept extensive records of his hives for the last 40 years and has been freezing pollen samples since he remarked that 100% of hives near peach plantations dwindled and died out within 9 months. His records consist of 144,501 observations made on 3,258 colonies. He has at last managed to have his samples analysed by Dr Jean-marc Bonmatin, an eminent expert at the CNRS, the National Centre for Scientific Research.
The pollen was found to contain 2,29 ng acétamipride per gram, and this neonicotinoid is not covered by the EU moratorium
It is found in preparations used on a range of fruit trees from cherry to apple and in domestic garden products.
If its use continues the results of the moratorium will be meaningless. UNAF is also worried about the use of Thiacloprid and is asking that the Minister of Agriculture extend the partial ban to cover all neonics.
