This was one of the methods I used for walk-aways. But the key in any of
this, as noted by Charlie,  especially with limited or no ferals or other
apiaries around is to bring in some new queens to keep the stock diverse. I
did not do this because they were fine before Varroa, but after Varroa they
declined - no ferals and no apiaries.
