The UK practice, used successfully for generations so that AFB is now a rarity is, first a legal 'standstill order' is placed on the apiary so that nothing can be moved away until stage 2 has been completed, which may take a little while to arrange, especially if laboratory confirmation of the initial diagnosis is awaited. Stage 2 is to dig a hole and burn the entire contents of the hive (having killed the bees with petrol) and then bury the debris. The interior of the hive is scorched with a blow lamp until there is a slight darkening of the wood.

This approach very much has the support of UK beekeepers. The Bee Inspector certifies what has been destroyed in the way of frames, honey etc and the beekeeper claims compensation from BDI (Bee Disease Insurance), an organisation run by beekeepers for beekeepers and paid for by a small premium per hive when renewing their annual subs to the BKA. Any surplus funds are directed into disease research.

Chris

Do you destroy AFB hives or do you use a torch to cleanse the insides?
