I agree wholeheartedly. The problem with so many of these studies is they are fishing expeditions. Somebody has a hunch and they try to build a case around it. Many important scientific discoveries have been made this way. However, at some point the theory has to be independently verified. 

Simply because no one has done that -- we cannot therefore assume that the conclusions are reasonable or correct. Many assertions are made that cannot be disproved, such as the existence of forest sprites. The advancement of science involves rigorous verification. The chief evil is confirmation bias.
