I've always wondered about the recommendation to use newspaper for
combines.  Unless the bees are in a robbing situation, we never bother, and
rarely see any fighting.  If there is any nectar flow on, it seems that the
bees hardly notice.

However, if I am combining a queenright nuc above a box of queenless bees,
I will put a piece of newspaper (the narrow insert sheet) crossways to keep
the queen from running down into the box of strange bees.
