I was interested in the comment by Paul VanSlyke regarding the use of 1/8"
plywood to protect the blueboard from chewing.  In taking a closer look at
previously wintered blueboard pieces, I see that some of the chewed
indentations are substantial enough to noticeably offset the insulating
qualities of the blueboard (i.e. a gap of 3/8" all the way to the edge of
the blueboard).

 

Haven't done the math as yet, but I think that the max life of an
unprotected (chewed) piece of blueboard might be 4 years (2 years on each
side) vs. the one-time additional cost of a piece of thin plywood or
masonite to protect it.
