How specific to bees do you need to be?

There is a great deal known about structure/composition of Drosophila eggs. They are the "mouse model" for insects, and it is generally assumed that most of the other insects will have the same general biology of their eggs and pre-hatch embryonic stages.

Any general "Developmental Biology" text will help you, but in particular, the texts by Gilbert and also the one by Mueller are very good.
