Dear B-Liners,

                                             REARING QUALITY QUEENS

The Ontario Beekeepers' Association is offering a special Tech-Transfer Course.

In recent years, Ontario beekeepers have adopted breeding mite resistant honey bees as a long
term solution to the parasitic mites in bee colonies. It is time to reinforce this strategy in the light
of discovering Apistan-resistant varroa mites in the USA, and the need for integrating the resistant
bee stocks to commercial bee colonies to control the parasitic mites and bee diseases. Adopting
the integrated parasitic mite management program will help to keep healthy bees, reduce the use
of chemicals in bee colonies, and reduce the chance of developing resistance by mites to
pesticides.

The focus of this course is rearing RESISTANT QUALITY QUEENS and MARKETING OF
THESE QUEENS. What makes or breaks a great queen?

The following subjects will be addressed:
  - Rearing and Production of quality queens.
  - Improved methods for mating, storage, nucs, shipping and introducing queens.
  - Evaluation, breeding and maintenance of selected mite resistant-hygienic bee stocks.
  - Possible solutions to Apistan-resistant Varroa mites and integrated Parasitic Mite
          Management in queen producing operations.
  - Marketing of queens and nucs.
  - Panel discussion for queen quality and related subjects of
breeding and augmentation of mite resistant bees in commercial bee operations in Ontario.

Course instructors are:
  - Barry Davies - Buckfast breeder in Ontario
