We put the thymol in an old honey jar lid resting on the excluder; some 
colonies will propolise the excluder around the lid.  Oddly, the ones that 
do this the most are the ones with some Italian genes.  Now that I have 
virtually eliminated the yellow bees I do not see it as much.
