Perhaps an appropriate question to ask those beekeepers with a bee yard
covered with pine needles seem devoid of SHB?

I personally have one clear testimony - three hives under white pine, all
understory is clear/clean, probably because of the needles and no SHB

In contrast, two of my clients , within 3 miles, with bee yards in shade,
(discouraged) have abundant SHB. The yards are mowed grass.
