The queen usually does check a cell with her front end before laying an egg in
it from her back end. If Rex is right perhaps she is using her antennae which
are sensitive to scent/pheromones to check that the cell is clean and ready for
laying in and that she has not laid in it already. I had wondered why queen
cups look so different to the finished article. I hope somebody with an
observation hive , patience and an enquiring mind can check out Rex's
suggestion.
