"Scam" originally was a carnival term meaning "to fleece the public". (1966) Wall St. Jrnl.

With most crowd funded proposals I see, a reasonable goal is set and once it's reached they stop asking for more money. I have sent money to musicians who are seeking to finance the recording of their next CD, which typically can cost $20,000 or so.
