Instead of patty making you can
load the stuff into a zip lock bag, cut a hole in
one corner and use it to apply 
the mixture along the top bars of the brood frames in
'beads'; not as quick
as inserting a patty but then you avoid the patty making
step all together,, also this method increases the number
of bees that can access your supplement.
of course you might not want to trade off the installation
time for the time making patties

Sometimes in late winter on good days,
 I do this but use honey instead of sugar
