Thanks for the tip, Randy.  I'm downloading right now, but I have a full day 
ahead, so I will be tomorrow before I have a chance to take a good look.

Any further ideas on the topic or references will be appreciated.  I wonder 
how well understood this important topic might be.  I don't see much about 
it, but it seems crucial to intelligent splitting..
