Hi all

Lost in the discussion about to queen or not to queen, is the concept of stock selection and stock improvement. If you want to raise mongrel bees, no easier way to do it than to let the bees alone.

If you want quality, I suggest that queens purchased from reputable breeders are worth the expense. Many of these people go to a great deal of effort to produce a quality product and it is certainly worth trying them before issuing blanket proclamations.

Maybe the bees are no better than what you have, find out! Even if you don't requeen, try making divides with queens purchased from different sources and compare. You might be surprised at what you find out.
