The queen is probably laying, and that brood requires LOTS of food.

When the queen is NOT laying and the bees are NOT flying, very little food is
used.
But, feeding brood requires lots of food use, and when it gets warm enough to
have both  queen laying and bees FLYING, food supplies disappear RAPIDLY.
