Following the mitochondria is like following a surname. For the longest time I thought my ancestry was German because I could follow my last name (Borst) back to Stuttgart in the 1600s. But when I had my DNA done by 23&me, it became apparent that my ancestry is mostly from the UK, which in fact is supported by the genealogy. The other families are Loring, Pratt, Young, Campbell, Parker, etc. None of them German.
