Maybe it smells too new. One way to get bees to go up into boxes is
the leave the lids off for a while.  Of course you have to do that for
the whole yard and/or consider the risk of robbing.  I assume that
robbing would not be an issue in the circumstances you describe,
anyhow.

I've never noticed that, but alfalfa is everywhere I go.
