Actually, this is pretty much reality and is explained in a very entertaining fashion in this book:

Dean gave it to me as an addition to our microbe/bee library.  


Another great book on the topic (more recent) is Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer.

Thanks for reminding me that we have these books!  I've been wishing for some good bedtime reading and don't have time now for a visit to the library....
