a couple of thoughts here:

1. When we were in Florida last winter for a beekeeping conference, there was a state bee inspector in attendance. He stated (quite plainly) that he knows of at least one feral population of Amm in a somewhat isolated area of the state. He described them as small, dark, and gentle....he has plenty of AHB experience, and insisted that this was obviously different.

2. I'm kicking myself for not noting the exact date and document where this came from, but it was from a quarterly report of the Madison bee lab in December 1951. I do have a copy of the document here, but no time to look it up at the moment. If anyone is interested, I'll have time later in the week to look it up and cite it specifically.

In any case, this is in regards to the usda run breeding program (which was quite extensive) in which crosses getting very aggressive. I don't believe that AHB was yet involved in the program (although Kerr did spend 2 months at the lab earlier in the year):

"...bee gloves and coveralls, frowned upon by progressive beekeepers as cumborsome and unnecessary, had to be used even during the height of the honey flow to avoid an unbearable amount of punishment".
