As far as I could understand, this kind of study
failed to protect non-targeted insects in Europe for
(at least) the following reasons:
1. This experience does not take into account
by-products of the initial molecule in nectar and
pollen. Those by-products are sometimes (often) more
toxic than the initial molecule.
2. This experiment only check acute toxicity. Hives
weakness or death occur even if foraging bees are not
exposed to the LD50 (acute toxicity) since larvae are
exposed to chronic toxicity via pollen at far higher
levels since they are in devlopment and have a far
lower mass than workers (like toxicity measured for
adult is different from toxicity for foetus). Thus
hives are more sensitive to disease and more often
fail in winter, if I understood well.
