If you cut the slot large enough for the Honey Bee to enter, you will kill a very, very large number of the Bees. Maybe the entire hive.
Slots have to be less than 1/8" tall. Mine are 3/4" wide X about 3/32" tall.
I have not found a bee inside. But I have found many, many Small Hive Beetles.
Extreme care is needed to make sure opening is not too large. Also, when removing inner covers or tops, extreme care is also needed.
