The analogy was intended to mindset of the offender, not the actual details.

Each offender has the knowledge its bad,  yet decides there own skill set
and personal benefit trumps the accepted knowledge.

And yes to a point the analogy is flawed.  The cigarette is for small
physical benefit,  with no gain to society at all.   The farmers generally
are feeding the world so that increase (although money is the goal) is at
least feeding someone.  This is a bit nebulous when you add golf courses and
gardens to the argument.

Actually to take it further,  should one desire at least the pesticide is
EPA approved as perfectly acceptable.  One could argue the Farmer is well
within common practice.   
While the same government has time and time again pointed out the dangers of
the other, and in general has condemned the act.


Again,  it was gear toward the thinking and hypocrisy of us as humans,  not
any one in particular.
