I would add to Adam's advice:

locate hives on south side of a bush or provide other protection from
cold winter wind (here NW)

provide upper entrance to vent moisture from hive on same side as
bottom entrance(often cut from rim of inner cover)

fit 2" styrofoam slab (SM is best) into upper side of inner cover ( no
openings in inner cover so bees can't get at styrofoam)
