So, the search is on. I am now looking for *definitive descriptions* of 

1) the average and range of colony life span

2) the average and range of maximum colony population

All of these would be affected by climate, weather, flow conditions, management (or non-management). 

Thanks for all who have chimed in, but we aren't there yet.
