I have been wondering the same thing (how to make my own extractor). I also found the USDA plans. Given the parts and tools that I'd have to buy to make the gears and basket, it was not the low-cost option.

e-Bay has used extractors for sale on a regular basis. So far, they've been going for more than I want to pay (including shipping and given the inherent unknowns about quality, servicability, etc.). I've seen a few at local auctions, but they were a lot more machine than I need.

I just recently saw a new all-plastic extractor that Dadant is carrying. It is certainly the cheapest option I've found so far. I trust Dadant not to carry junk but still wonder about the durability of plastic gears. Does anyone have any experience with this product?
