a couple of Garett Slater question... 
Does anyone know how to diagnose a HMF poisoning? or know of symptoms
common to bees fed toxic HFCS? 

my comments....
I am not certain where you are located but very recently I heard Bill Baxter at the Texas Apiary Inspection Service mention that someone in Texas seems to have had a similar problem.  One of BIP folks (Dan) is in the same building.
