I believe one major factor in deciding whether to run deeps, shallows or in
between is the extractor.
We run a 6 deeps or 12 shallows extractor. When using deep frames we
find that the bottom bar is so close to the center hub that the bottom of
the frame revolves very slowly. To speed that bottom area up to a speed that
extracts, the outside is too fast and we risk blowouts. So the extraction
rate is a lot slower using deep frames.
We now are changing over to a mid size. The frames being shallower
are farther from the central hub, revolve faster, are drone brood and all in
all extract in half the time. So all in all we prefer shallows.
