The story comes from the Greek mercenary leader Xenophon's account of
fighting in what is now modern day Turkey. Here's his book on line in

He claimed that honey made his troops go mad, but it seems ambigous to me
whether he meant crazy or just crazy with pain. He said the symptoms lasted
for about 4 days and included things like stomach troubles.
