Assessment of Wintering of the Caucasian Bee in Polypeneurethane and Wood Hives from a Comparative Perspective
International Conference ASE-I - 2021: Applied Science and Engineering
.
The article provides information on beehives made of different materials, their advantages and disadvantages in operation. It also reflects the results of wintering of Caucasian gray mountain bees in hives of different material in a comparative aspect. The hives made of wood and polyphenourethane (PPU) of Root ten frame design for keeping bee families in the conditions of the Chechen Republic were tested. Hives made of wood and PPU showed that bees overwintered well, that bee mortality over the winter was within the normal range, and that there was no significant difference in overwintering.

During the winter periods in a number of years, no significant difference was found between the experimental bee colonies in terms of honey consumption and brood rearing in early spring. ... polyurethane foam beehives are excellent for keeping bees. ... the cost of hives made of PPU is higher than that of wood. ... But this does not mean that wooden ones are inferior to them in all respects and it is difficult to challenge beekeepers who are adherents of hives made of wood. In our opinion, it is possible to use PPU hives for keeping bees, they are almost as good as wooden hives.
