Allen wonders how "apis" fared before Man cam along and started stirring 
the pot.

A point that comes to mind: Maybe Man was delivered a creature that was 
not the most ideal item. Environmental considerations may have resulted 
in a better format in an earlier epoch but one that was no longer 
available to play with. The bees I presume could not conscientiously 
direct their own destiny.
