I've used a 5 gal pail of soapy water on AFB hives. Put an entrance reducer in, pop the cover and pour. Gone in less time than it takes to dump the whole pail. If the colony isn't AFB and the equipment can be saved, there's no residue afaik. Shake it out and let it dry. Good for a few colonies...wouldn't want to do a lot that way...wouldn't want to do a lot anyway
