Interesting observation Charlie--here in Calif foothills there are no
drones to speak of in late summer or fall.

Ditto here.  Even a handful of bees generally protects a hive from robbing.
 But beekeepers in SoCal tell me that the robbing pressure from the
Africanized ferals is intense.
