On treatment with fluvalinate, varroa develops a cross-resistance with all pyrethoids (such as flumethrin, amitraz and acrinathrin).

> There is no cross resistance between fluvalinate and amitraz. This was a major reason to convince the Pest management Regulatory Agency in Canada to register Apivar. We had the data to support that issue in the application. Before requesting Apivar registration, I tested apivar strips using Pettis test and showed efficacy under laboratory conditions was over 95% ± 1 in comparison to Apistan 40% ± 20 using Canadian varroa mites. We also tested flumethrin at the same time, we found cross resistance with fluvalinate. These data support the early findings in Europe regarding this type of cross resistance. When we tested Check mite the efficacy was 22% ± 90...Not good at all. We observed mites walking on the strips and no kill. This work was done 2007 when we had the big kill that is coincided with CCD in the USA.
