As I suspect that we all know, soapy water makes a very effective spray to kill many pests in the garden (why do farmers not just spray soapy water???).

However, thymol - which was not directly mentioned - is a very effective pesticide; I use it to kill white fly on African violet house plants.  Just put the pot in a polythene bag with thymol crystals for a day or two and all the white fly will die with no harm to the plant.
