Good evening All

French beekeepers held mass demonstrations in Paris, Dijon, Aquitaine and
Grenoble in protest against the licensing of Syngenta's neonicotinoid
pesticide 'Cruiser' - (active insecticide Thiamethoxam)- which the French
Beekeepers Union UNAF says will destroy the entire beekeeping industry in
France.

Despite the withdrawal of the license for Syngenta’s pesticide ‘Cruiser’, by
the French Council of State, for use as a seed treatment on maize in 2008,
2009 and 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture not only continued to allow use
of this product, but in June 2011 it authorized the use of Syngenta ‘Cruiser
OSR’ for oilseed rape/canola and what is astonishing is that at the same
time, national beekeeping organisations in America and Britain have been
silent and 'thumb in bum - brain in neutral', in the face of these
bee-killing pesticides being unleashed on a massive scale in their
countries.

Why is it that the French beekeepers commissioned fully independent
university studies - which confirmed that Imidacloprid, Clothianidin,
Thiamethoxam and Fipronil were deadly toxic to honeybees - and forced their
government to ban these insecticides as long ago as 2000. Why is it that in
the same period - American and British beekeepers have taken no similar
action - merely stood by and watched the annihilation of millions of
bee-colonies?

Isn't it time that the national beekeeping organisations in Britain and
America stood up for their bees and demanded completely independent risk
assessments be carried out on these pesticides?
I stood up at a Scottish Beekeepers AGM asking the executive to make a move
regarding pesticides only to be told ... 'We don't want to rock the boat'

If the so-called regulatory agencies in Britain and the USA have been
castrated by the pesticide companies - to the point where they are merely
'sock puppets' for the industry - as many observers believe - isn't it time
we created new agencies, new beekeeping organisations to represent
beekeepers rather than pesticide companies?
