What's the history on why it was yanked from the approved status for use 
in the U.S.?

The end of the wikipedia page gives some real clues under the "Human 
Toxicity" heading.

But the US EPA have published several papers (pdf downloads) on the 
registration and reregistration of Amitraz, there is a LOT of detail ....
