I was re-reading  Bumblebee economics this morning (thanks Randy)    and on page 151 is a great paragraph,  it references the ban on DDT back in 1968, and the problem of the replacement pesticide used in 1970 being even worse on bees and other insects.

In searching for a already typed section to quote,  I ran across this link,   quite the read actually.
