I find that bees travel only as far as my car to poop. I think they find the 
range dots on the green civic fashionable.
Now there's an experiment that a school/researcher could carry out.  Near an apiary lay out sheets of material, of a range of colours, some shiny, some matt and count the spots at the end of the day to see if some are more preferred targets than others.  As a preliminary trial you could simply move a hive to near a large car park.
