Hey Wayne, thanks for your response...yes this has been the general consensus as others in our local club have lost hives in similar fashion, including the beekeeper who is sort of my mentor. I've enjoyed the discussion ~ raising my overall sense of keeping bees...the mite issue is playing on the radio as I type this, with beekeepers trying to genetically develop a queen that bites off the legs of the mites causing them to bleed to death ~ bees fighting back!
