If you want to make an 'easy' sugar brick just put a 2 inch wooden rim on
your hive top, lay in a single sheet of newspaper and fill the rim with dry
granulated sugar.  Rising moisture will turn the dry sugar into a brick in
short order.  If any is left in the spring it is easily removed and goes
into solution for liquid feed.
