<First of all, I doubt whether you guys really agree about the solutions to
this so-called problem. But the main point is what you see in the US --
monocropping, the same malls with the same fast food joints in every town,
etc. is the product of a democratic society. As Churchill supposedly said,
democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.>

We're actually a Constitutional Republic that elects officals via a
Representative Democracy.  Sorry I felt like quibbling today.

I don't see the whole corn thing changing anytime soon.  Corn makes too
much money for too many people, and subsidizing it makes a lot of food
(processed) a lot cheaper.  Even though we pay for it through taxes people
don't "see" that money since it comes out with everything else.  But if all
the snack food suddenly jumped in price and the farmers in the cornbelt
started losing money you better believe people would notice.

<shrug> that's just my take on things, we're a corn nation and eat more of
it than anyone else in the world.  I still prefer my corn in cob version
though.
