I'm glad to hear this from an experienced beekeeper.  I'd given up on them
because I'd tried unsuccessfully to use them several times.  The bees
simply didn't take the syrup, whereas all other hives with baggie feedeers
did.  I did the requisite scientfic switcheroo with the same results.  I
also made a trail of syrup over the edge.  Lloyd's suggestion that they be
painted might help, if only to help with the mildew.  Any other suggestions
to get the bees to take the feed?  Am I unique with this problem?  The
seller of the feeder at Dadant seems to think so.
