If you're talking about bringing in stock from other locations
I can agree to a point.  I try to buy stock that is best suited to my area
and needs, but for me buying local is kind of pointless since most of the
local bees spend the Winter in the South.

Yeah, sure, but where did the stock come from in the first place? Nature, in her infinite wisdom, did not place Apis mellifera in the "New World" so it has only been widespread here for about 200 years. It probably took several hundred thousand years for Apis mellifera to differentiate into the various subspecies found in Europe and Africa. 

I seriously doubt whether natural selection has had much effect on US honey bees, since human selected bees are far more numerous in most locales, and any queen that mates in the air is going to get hit by whatever local drones happen to be hanging out close by. But this is common knowledge, has been for 200 years.
