There are UV lights with different wave lengths.  The ones we see for the most part would not be effective for sterilization.  It's those that are used for lighting up fluorescent materials.  The lights that you would want to use are those that can be found in sterilization cabinets for materials like safety glasses and such.   The lights have to be designated for use for sterilization purposes.
