Bullet point permanent marker - I put initials and date on every top bar - 
ink soaks into the wood and is sealed by the bees with a light covering of 
propolis.  I have some 7 years old that are still as clear as when they were 
first marked.

Essential to mark frames rather than hives.  Bees are worth more than boxes.
