We just went through the worst cold spell in a few years here with temperatures down to minus 40 locally, and minus 47 Celsius in Edmonton. It did a lot of damage.  People had gotten used to milder winters lately.

However, we had a big melt and it's above zero right now and there's water on top of the ice on my pond.  I expect we'll see temperatures approaching minus 40  again before February is over.

We are far from the city so we're not infected by the heat generated by large populations and our winters vary quite widely as they have for the last 50 years I've lived here.
