I, too, experience a swarm on the ground this year. This was my first one ever. I brought 5 empty frames with comb on it and laid them stacked up next to the swarm. They immediately climbed up on the comb. Within 2 minutes, I had them in a box. Just some stragglers left remaining.
I thought there would be a hole in the ground, but there was comb built on the ground. The wax was attached to the ground, leaves and grass. It did not have the look of honeycomb, just "blobs" of wax poorly put together. The family that called me stated that they had been in their yard for about a week and a half.
