I have to say I am surprised at the replies.....

Seems to me some strange and well, lets just say thoughts I don’t agree with. Who am I or are we, to discourage anyone? I simple tell most I don't have time to help them, and direct them, but I would never be so _________ as to even attempt to discourage someone.
Even if they get in for a season and find out they don't belong, so what?? It was their choice, many of us were greenies with wild ideas when we started......

Personally I always direct them to local clubs, beekeeping for dummies, and where to buy gear..... Even if they fail, its money to our industry, and the right thing to do. Oh, and always mention Varro. That eco warrior with 500 to spend can spend it in the bee industry, or squandered it in some dumb charity that sues the EPA..... I know which I prefer.
