Thanks Pete. This experiment used a very different method of ventilation
(through the insulation) than practiced by others. However, it did
decrease mold. I'm wondering if anyone has seen actual data on Langstroth
hives used with either an upper ventilation hole or entrance, or with a
shim.

One reason that I ask is that when I speak with beekeepers in cold winter
climates, that I sometimes hear that breaking the propolis seal under the
lid during winter will result in the death of the colony. This seems at
odds with providing top ventilation.
